Prime Minister Charles Michel said he hopes for an “intelligent Brexit” which would preserve the economic interests of the United Kingdom, of the EU and of Belgium. The statement was made following a meeting with his British counterpart, Theresa May.

Mrs. May has confirmed her intention of applying Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon, which would initiate the procedure for the exit of the United Kingdom from the EU before the end of March 2017. The Belgian Prime Minister has pleaded for an “intelligent Brexit” which would preserve the economic interests of the EU, the United Kingdom – Belgium’s fourth largest economic partner – and of Belgium. “At the same time, this Brexit must not be the starting point of a dismantlement of the EU, must not give other European countries bad ideas at a time in which Europe needs unity,” warned Charles Michel, who was content to have obtained “greater clarity” on British intentions.

The Prime Minister also commented on the “firm conviction on the British side that the relationship with Belgium is good and must remain good.” The meeting also allowed touching on major international matters, such as the situation in Syria and Libya, relations with Russia and the fight against terrorism.
