Developments in the field of the rule of law—especially questions related to the transparency of the legislative processes, public procurement, legal certainty, and the independence of the judiciary—are becoming increasingly intertwined with the quality of investment environment in Central and Eastern Europe, especially in Hungary and Poland. However, investors are not only subjects to negative rule-of-law developments, but also agents of positive change.
AmCham Slovakia’s long-time, first-hand experience demonstrates that international investors can make a positive contribution to the preservation and improvement of rule-of-law standards—and thus also to the quality of investment environment—via structured, collective dialogue with the governments.
If investors’ organizations and chambers of commerce and trade join their efforts, elaborate common positions, and speak with one voice, their message rarely remains unheard, even with regard to sensitive rule-of-law developments.
This closed, invitation only stakeholder workshop organized by the German Marshall Fund of the United States and AmCham Slovakia provides important insights into the structures, operations, results, and challenges of the international investors’ Rule of Law Initiative coordinated by AmCham Slovakia and offers a venue to deliberate the potential feasibility of similar initiatives in Hungary and Poland.
